The production of Pu-Erh tea is a secret kept by the Chinese government. The quality and taste gets better with age. Pu-Erh tea is grown in the Yunnan district on a mountain called Xishuangbanan Liucha. The tea is made from the Daye-tea trees leaves, which is most likely the mother tree of tea. That is why Pu-erh tea is called the worlds oldest tea.
Pu-erh is a red tea. When the first drying is completed, the leaves are soaked again, and the drying process starts over. The tealeaves are often compressed to a “cake” for storage. The teacakes are stored in cool basements. A Pu-erh cake of good quality can be stored for up to a hundred years. It is the only tea that gets better with age. An old Pu-erh teacake can be worth as much as a small car.
According to Chinese tradition drinking Pu-erh gives large health benefits. The tea removes the feeling of being hungry, and speeds up the food-melting process as well as burns fat. Because of this the tea is also called the diet tea. The tea also lowers the cholesterol and removes poison from the body.
Brewing instructions:
90-100°C, 6-8 min. Pu-erh is the only type of tea to which adding sugar is recommended.
The French call Pu-erh “beauty tea”, and in Japan it is sold in pharmacies.
